CZF Scholarships Awarded for 2026/27
CZF Kronitz Memorial Scholarship
The CZF/ Kronitz Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Dr. Leon Aryeh Kronitz to encourage and to assist young Canadian Jews who wish to study in Israel. The expectation is that these young Jewish adults will return to Canada and will provide service to the Canadian Jewish Community. This scholarship program is directed towards:
1. Recent high school graduates, university students or graduate students pursuing general studies in Israel for a full academic year,
or
2. High school or university students interested in attending an academic program in Israel for half an academic year.
The 2026/27 scholarships have now been awarded. Over 40 excellent applications were received, and the Scholarship Committee had some difficult decisions to make, spent considerable time in reviewing all applications and came to an agreement on the merits of each application.
Applicants were judged on their personal expression of Zionism, their academic record and their financial need, among other factors. In the end, 21 scholarships were awarded – some for $2,000 and some for $1,000. Scholarship recipients were from Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver making this a very national award. There were 13 women and 8 men.
A total of $32,000 was awarded in scholarships this year, the largest amount in the scholarship’s history. One of the deciding factors for this outlay was the increasing costs of these programs.
The scholarship is funded by the Hebrew Culture Organization of Canada, the charitable arm of the Canadian Zionist Federation. Hebrew Culture has a considerable scholarship endowment and because of strong annual returns on the invested money, the Committee was able to confidently support the decision to provide this year’s financial outlay. The funds are invested with the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto.
This was the first time some scholarships were awarded to students who were in half-year education programs in Israel. This new policy allowed for a larger section of the community to apply for assistance. Only two half-year scholarships were awarded, but we hope that in future years, as this aspect of the program is broadly publicized, this will increase.
